Metal Tumbling – Tumble Finishing ServicesMetal tumbling is the process of finishing small rough parts of metal en masse. Metals that can be polished via tumble finishing include stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, brass, copper and bronze. The mass tumbling of metal parts is accomplished using an array of machines. It can take minutes of several hours depending on the scope of the project, the roughness of the parts and the chosen method.
At RP Abrasives, we specialize in two types of metal tumbling: high-energy and vibratory. The high-energy metal tumbling process involves placing parts, media, water and a surfactant into a barrel. Then, the barrel, which is sealed with a lid, is rotated on a carousel holding four barrels. While the carousel spins one way, the barrels go the opposite direction. This creates a powerful centrifugal force that finishes the parts in a very efficient manner.
We have four high-energy metal tumblers in-house. The machine pictured here has a capacity of 80 liters. We also possess two 120-liter and one 20-liter high-energy tumbler. We favor Mass Finishing Inc. tumbling machines because we find them to be the most durable and dependable. The machine we use for a particular job hinges on the project's scope and the size of the parts.
Vibratory tumbling uses friction to smooth objects. The media vibrates against the parts to create the desired finish.
