How RoHS 2 Compliance Affects You
RP Abrasives guarantees RoHS and RoHS 2 compliance and passivates following all ASTM and AMS standards.
Compliance directives officially went into effect on January 1, 2014. Not only does this affect manufacturers of products imported into the European Union, but it also affects every process involved in the subcontracted manufacturing of those products, including finishing processes such as painting and coating and even passivation.
What Is RoHS 2 Compliance?
As part of their Restriction of Hazardous Substances initiatives, the EU has restricted the usage of six hazardous materials (lead, cadmium, mercury, polybrominated diphenyl ether, polybrominated biphenyls, and hexavalent chromium) in any part or material included in the construction of:
- Large & Small Household Appliances
- IT & Telecommunications Equipment
- Consumer Equipment
- Lighting Equipment (Including Lightbulbs)
- Electronic & Electrical Tools
- Medical Devices
- Monitoring & Control Instruments
- Toys, Leisure & Sports Equipment
- Automatic Dispensers
- Semiconductor Devices
Therefore, any medical devices, for example, imported into—or manufactured within—the European Union must be certified as RoHS and RoHS 2 compliant. Further, every single process involved in the construction of that device must also be certified. Without the proper documentation, your parts could very well find themselves in customs limbo, and you’ll risk losing customers.
