ASTM B600

ASTM B600

ASTM B600 is the specification for descaling and cleaning titanium and titanium alloy surfaces, commonly used in the medical industry when titanium is involved. This process removes contaminants such as soils, oxides, and scales from the surface of the metal that may have resulted from heat treatment or contact with foreign substances during the manufacturing process.

Our experts at RP Abrasives can complete ASTM B600 passivation for various industries, particularly within the medical field. Because contaminants harm a finished part’s quality, stability, and corrosion resistance, ASTM B600 passivation is especially crucial for titanium parts used in the medical industry. Some common examples of this type of passivation used in the medical industry include hospital and surgical equipment and tools, surgical fixtures, human implants, and dental tools and fixtures.

This passivation is done in several steps. The first is an abrasive cleaning of the part - this is normally done by bead blasting the part with glass bead media using blast cabinets. We utilize glass bead media because of its iron-free chemical composition. The chemical used is Citric Acid solution, the same solution used in other passivation specifications (ASTM A967 and AMS 2700).

The second step is the actual passivation of the part. Our passivation process is typically done on stainless steel and titanium. This specification is specifically for titanium, requiring two of our core finishing processes: bead blasting and passivation. Most companies with passivation capability don’t have bead blasting capability, making RP Abrasives stand out from the competition.

There are normally no post-treatments necessary, and parts only need ASTM B600 passivation once unless they receive more machining after the treatment, which is very rare.
